Q: How do I buy a Imported Rx7 FD and making it legal to buy?
Hi Im new to this importing. I was wondering if I buy a used stock Rx7 FD from Japan, what would be the requirements I would have to do to be able to drive legally in California?
A: If you are talking about a 1996+ model you’re pretty close to SOL. Cars after 1996 HAVE to be OBD-II compliant in the US. Since the RX-7 stopped being produced here in 1995 there are no OBD-II compliant RX-7s and that means a 1996 or later model would be a pain in the butt to convert to OBD-II.
If you want an FD RX-7 buy one locally. If you want the full 280hp of a later model RX-7 you can get it by simply upgrading the turbo system to JDM late model FD turbos or a better pair.
Q: How much does it cost to rebuild an RX7 FD engine?
I want to buy a 1992 RX7 FD its $2500 (nice deal) but its got 135,000 miles on it so the engine will probably need some work. I want to know if its worth the buy if I’m going to have to do an engine rebuild.
Why would I get an RX7 if I dont want the rotary? I wouldnt.
A: Agreed! Why would someone buy an RX-series Mazda if he or she didn’t want the Wankel engine?
Here’s a good discussion on rebuilding Mazda rotary engines:

Also, this company seems to specialize in rebuilding such motors (I have no connection or experience with this company, caveat emptor!)

Q: How much would it cost for labor to install a 13bt into a 86 rx7?
I have a 86 rx7 with no motor or tranny. I am about to buy a 13bt motor and tranny complete swap. I guess I am just curious to know how much the labor would be to put the motor and tranny in. Any answers would help. Thanks!
A: anywhere from 1500 to 15000 depending on where u live..here in missouri- i could get it done all aprts and labor for around 1500
Q: How do I tell If an rx7 was originally a turbo before I owned it?
I just got a 1991 rx7 and it isnt idling very well..So i started to dig around to see what could be a problem. Nothing. So my last chance in figuring it out is to know whether or not the engine was rebuilt as an N/A. Any help would be appreciated.
A: You can call a Mazda dealer and give them the VIN and ask them what the car was equipped with when it was born. As far as the engine being rebuilt as a N/A one, as far as I know, there is no difference in the internals on the rotary engine. Please do some research on your own about that, but I think I’m right. One thing I have noticed about rx’s is this. The leading and trailing spark plugs are different. If you put the leading into the trailing area, the car WILL run like crap especially at idle. NGK makes the plugs that Mazda used in your car when it was born, if you have anything other than that, as long as they are the correct ones, in the correct spots, it SHOULD work ok. Personally I love NGK’s though and I’d put those in if they are anything else.
I hope this helps, if not you can give it to me =) I promise to take good care of it!
Q: What year RX7 Air Flow Meter can I use on my Turbo 91 Miata?
I hear/read that I can improve intake volume by “upgrading” to an RX7 Air Flow Meter but I can barely find a subject matter expert online. Can you lead me in the right direction by shooting me a link?
A: You will be looking for the 87-88 YR AFM. This will only net you about 5 HP over 6k rpm’s. You will also need to “Tune” it which entails openeing the AFM, loosening a screw and turning the gear a few clicks. The RX7 AFM will make your car run rich, so changing this gear position will help that. In the ned, you will have a larger volume of air.
There are plenty of “free” hp upgrades, search miata.net and type free horsepower int he search bar.
Just noticed you have a turbo. If you have a piggyback ecu controller, your best bet will be to datalog your AFM and remove it entirely.
Search these links below.
Q: Can the wiring harness from a 1991 single turbo mazda Rx7 work in my 1993 twin turbo rx7?
I need a new wiring harness for my rx7 and idk if this one will work?
A: no, the computers in those 2 cars are different. the are 2 diff. generations of rx7s. in order to use a wireing harness for a diff generation car/motor the car must have the motor/ecu to match the wireing harness. hope this helps.
Q: Can i take a rx7 engine and put it in a 98 honda civic?
Which year from 1993 to 1997 rx7 engine is the fastest? And can i put it in a 1998 honda civic?
So what would be the best engine and cheapest engine to put in a 98 honda civic?
A: RX7’s are rear wheel drive, so you will be cutting the hell out of the Civic to accommodate all the things necessary to fit everything including transmission, drive shaft, differential and rear axle. As said before, anything is possible but you have to wonder IS IT WORTH IT?
Q: what is the difference between a 91 mazda rx7 an a fcs3 or whatever?
what is the difference between a 91 rx7 an a fcs3 or whatever its called? im 16 looking to get a rx7 there is a 91 for sale by me with 74k on it for 6k good deal?
A: Its one car, its a 1991 Mazda rx7 fc3s. That’s kinda expensive for a first car so it depends on what kind of condition its in. Personally, if I had the money I would take that in a heartbeat, but that’s my fave car so if your looking for a reliable car to drive around on a regular basis that’s affordable that’s prob not for you. Its going to break down a lot, burn through gas(and oil), and insurance is going to be high.
E-mail me at steen_casey@yahoo.com with some details about what exactly your looking for in a car or some more details about that car and I’ll see if i can be of any help.
Q: Hi.I have a 1st gen rx7 and would like to know if anyone has transplanted a bigger power plant, cheers.?
Hi,Has anyone out there fitted another power plant to the 1st gen rx7.or any other handy tips on upgrades.Any info would be much appreciated cheers,Cody.
A: not sure what you mean>>> isn’t a rx7 a car….t
Q: Around how much exactly will it cost to change the automatic transmission to a manual on a rx7?
There is a RX7 that has been modified but its a automatic and i want it to be manual. Around how much will it be?
A: Selling it and buying a manual version is the most cost effective. I’ve priced the conversion myself and using used everything and not counting the money for labor and special tools, you are looking at probably $1000. Include the extras and your time (if you know how to play with rotary cars) and you’re in the $2-3000 range. I buy good first and second generation 7’s on eBay in that price range.
Q: Would a 3rd gen RX7 engine bolt up to a 1st gen RX7 body without any major modifications?
I am interested in buying a twin turbo 3rd gen rx7 engine and putting it in my 1st gen rx7. Both are 1.3l rotary engines. Would the 3rd gen engine drop in the 1st gen without any major modifications?
A: The problems you may run into are way the engine mounts are, and of course the ECM.
Buying an engine and ECM (including wiring harness) takes care of one problem.
Which only leaves the need to make sure you can attach the engine to the frame. There may be no problem here. If there is, the problem of making custom engine mounts car be overcome.
Here is a thread on how it is done. I don’t have time to shorten it.
Q: What is the best Turbo For My 1st gen RX7?
I have a 1985 Mazda RX7 GSL. It has a 1.3l 12A Carburated Rotary Engine. What would be the best type or size Turbocharger for this car?
A: With a carburetor turbo charging is very limited in boost! So I would not even think about a turbo charger with that set up.
First I would at least swap in a later model set up with fuel injection. This way you can use a system that can have an inter-cooler installed.
While I am working on a 97, I would still use the same route on your 85. That is a JDM swap for a turbo charged engine.
Q: Im getting a 1993 rx7 and i have lots of questions please help?
Okay im 16 and im looking for my first car i know i want a rx7 and i want to put a veilside bodykit on it but i dont know anywhere in south carolina that will put it on for me, and i dont mined a manual but i would like a automatic but i dont know if they make it?
A: GET. A. MANUAL! If you want a sportscar, especially a cool one like an RX7, GET A MANUAL!. A sportscar with an automatic isn’t a sports car at all. It just makes you look like an idiot who bus cars because they look good, not because they drive well.
Now, a 15 year old car with a rare engine type for a new driver sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. Unless you know a hell of a lot about cars, or your dad is a mechanic, or you spend 40 grand on a car in perfect condition with a rebuilt engine, there is just going to be to much work to do to keep that old a car in running condition.
Whatever car you get though, if it’s a sports car, get a manual.
And what the hell is with everyone wanting veilside body kits on their RX7s? You can put the bodykit on yourself once you have it painted by a shop.
Q: what car should i go with nissan 240sx or mazda rx7?
what kind of car should i go with i would like a 91 nissan 240sx because they look nice and there a fun car to drive.but on the other hand my friend is selling a 1988 rx7 1.3 rotary motor which i have no idea what that is but my question is which car would be better a nissan 240sx or a rx7.and also the rx7 my friend is selling is convertible.
A: Nissan 240 will be easier to tune it for street racing and the parts are easy to find and not expensive
but the Rx7 is just as tunable and will make a good car but you can’t work in it as easily as the Nissan.
it sounds like you may not know a lot about engines, that’s why I say go with the 240 its less complicated motor a 4 cylinder.
The Rx7s re good but they can be tricky to tune up. you gotta know how that Rotary engine works and performs.
Q: How much will it cost to import a 1995-2000 rx7 from japan?
Hi ive been saving up for nice car for about 3 or 4 years. how much will it cost to import a rx7 to sydney. is hard to put the veilside fortune body kit on ( uncles a pannel beater ).
thanks
A: You’re better off just finding an RX7 in Sydney, it’s a lot less time consuming and even less costly.
A used FD-series RX-7 for which the VeilSide Fortune kit fits costs around AU$25-50,000, and the kit will most likely cost north of AU$25,000. You have a lot of work to do.
